Day 14 –The glory of sun, sand and seaweed

Waking up in California was an unbelievable feeling. We finally arrived at the point in our trip where we will no longer drive west. With no schedule, we decided to drive around Coronada Island and learn all about it. After 4 short minutes, we had covered the entire island. Chris made plans to play golf with his buddy, Steve O’Brien at Torrey Pines so the girls had a day to play. We grabbed our scooters and motored along the beach walk in front of the hotel that led to the boardwalk. It was a great way to get into California’s slower pace. From here, we grabbed our beach garbs and headed to Imperial Beach. Mom had a huge smile on her face – this was exactly what she wanted for our California experience. We dropped our stuff in the sand and ran into the water, only to be greeted by a huge surprise – SEAWEED!! We discovered the biggest difference between east coast and west coast water. GROSS!! We are not talking small pieces of seaweed. The Naval Air Station is located in the north corner of the island. As we were enjoying the sand and surf, there was an endless run of navy fighter planes coming back from their day’s assignments. They were so loud that the girls tried to scream louder than their jet engines. I was keeping an eye out for a Tom Cruise sighting…no such luck ladies!

After several hours, we headed back to the hotel and took a refreshing dip in the pool. From here, we headed back down the boardwalk in search of a relaxing dinner. Chris returned from golf just in time to join us for a wonderful family dinner. Lea and Erin did some shopping and were able to add to their thimble and bell collections, respectively. It was a day filled with swimming, sunning and chilaxing…we went back to the hotel for a good night sleep.

Thanks for traveling with us,
Debbi
