Day 23 – Capitola –Memory Lane Continues….

We left Monterey early since we wanted to make several stops along the way before our arrival in San Francisco. However, we quickly realized after talking with people that Monterey has a lot to offer and should be visited by everyone. For all you artichoke lovers, we drove through the artichoke capital of the world in Castroville. Here, you can get 10/$1.00. The girls saw all the day laborers picking the crops in the heat and have ruled this out as a career choice. Hope this means they are ready to hit the books come fall.

The “Debra Dunne History Tour” continued when we stopped at Capitola, a small beachside community. This was where I spent my summers, spending time with Dad, after moving to New York. The girls loved the little shops and the multi-colored, painted beach houses. It was hard to imagine Torey having the same freedom that I had at her age. What was my dad thinking??!! Dad – you’d be happy to know that Mr. Toot’s is still thriving and the town still has its quaintness that you love. From here, we headed straight to San Francisco. Our room was not ready so we took the time to walk through Chinatown. Lea loved Chinatown better in San Francisco than New York. We actually had fun shopping and Chris couldn’t resist the $1.88 T-shirt sale. He can be so cheap sometimes he squeaks. Other times, he spends, spends, spends. How about a little consistency for once Cdog?

For dinner, Chris wanted us to experience his favorite Italian restaurant in Nob Hill. They don’t take reservations but the weather was perfect so we didn’t care. It was 5 blocks from the hotel – straight up! The girls quickly learned that walking up the hills in San Francisco is easier when you walk backwards. After a 1 ½ hour wait for a table, Chris kept telling us that it would be worth it. He was right! We had an incredible meal in a very small space. We were definitely NOT prepared for the 55 degree weather that greeted us when we left the restaurant. Our walk back to the hotel will probably be one of our best “family” memories on this trip. Chris gave piggy back rides down the steep hills, the ladies boogied all the way home to some silly song and Torey’s infamous comment “I’m so cold I can’t even shiver” will keep us laughing forever.

What a great introduction to San Francisco. We can’t wait until tomorrow.

Good night,
Debbi
