Day 24 – A San Francisco Treat

This morning we wrapped up the “Debra Dunne History Tour” by having brunch with my cousin Esther, her husband Nate and their children Lotus and Lucian. The girls were very, very excited to meet Lotus and Lucian since they already felt a connection with them. At home, the girls have enjoyed reading Esther’s blog that chronicled the children’s lives from Lotus’ adoption to Lucian very recent birth. They live in a Soho type San Francisco neighborhood that is 7 blocks from the Golden Gate Park. After a fabulous brunch, we strolled through the park. We visited the Da Young museum where you can get a panoramic view of the entire city. It was amazing that you could see the entire city from an observation deck that was only 9 stories high. From here we walked around the park and saw the uniqueness that San Francisco is known for. From the bicyclists peddling with bubbles coming out the back or another with two boom boxes blasting Michael Jackson songs it was no freak show. Other were enjoying free lindy dance lessons at noon. It was all very entertaining. We arrived at a beautiful playground that was like no other that we have seen on this trip. The girls were overjoyed and there was no better opportunity to bond with Lotus, than while making cookies in the sand.

With weary legs and huge smiles, we said goodbye and continued on our sightseeing trip.
We drove over the Golden Gate bridge (and back!), we saw Alcatrez, and we watched Chris drive the Suburban down Lombard while the girls walked down the crookedist street. The girls and I stayed at Ghiradelli Square (did someone say chocolate?) while Chris returned to the hotel. The girls enjoyed a HUGE bowl of Ghiradelli ice cream. We strolled around the plaza and enjoyed looking at the vendors’ goods. It was an unanimous decision that we couldn’t leave San Francisco without a ride on the cable cars. We spent 1 hour waiting in line for this infamous experience. The girls were determined to get a spot where they can “hang” off the cable car. And they were not disappointed. I will always remember their smiles and laughter as we rode the cable car from Ghiradelli Square to Union Square (we even passed our stop for the hotel so that we could ride a few more blocks). We were on our legs from 9:00 am to 8:00 pm and my feet were absolutely killing me. But the girls never complained! What a wonderful time we had in San Francisco. This is a spot to bring your family and let loose.

Thanks for travelin’ with us,
Debbi

  2. I KNEW I should have hitched a ride on your Thule when you left our house! You are having so much fun. I'm reading and re-reading your tales of adventure and exploration. I can see Lotus fell in love with all of you, and Lucian has grown so much...I know now I have to get up to Esther and Nate's soon. Enjoy Tahoe and SLC. You are in for some gorgeous scenery in the next few drives. Love you all...Monica
